The paradoxical and often insecure dichotomy between people and dwellings is reflected in this mixed media oil painting. This painting is composed of one of my photographs printed on canvas (the architectural elements) and then painted over with oil paint to describe the sky, people and other elements as well as to retouch the photo. With the layering of paint over photo, my intention is to juxtapose various styles: the rendering of forms in an illusionistic manner, rougher brushwork and more graphic and linear elements. Essentially, I am intrigued by the contrast between the painted elements and the "realism" of the photo, and the tension this creates in the picture space, as if the painted person was walking out of the photo, while the tumultuous painted sky menaces above.

Mary Coleman Fantastic sense of emotion in this. Perhaps I am off, but what it feels like is that she is leaving behind chaos and drama and starting afresh in a new life.
