The paradoxical and often insecure dichotomy between people and dwellings is reflected in this mixed media oil painting. This painting is composed of one of my photographs printed on canvas (the architectural elements) and then painted over with oil paint to describe the sky, figure and other elements as well as to retouch the photo. With the layering of paint over photo, my intention is to juxtapose various styles: the rendering of forms in an illusionistic manner, rougher brushwork and more graphic and linear elements. Essentially, I am intrigued by the contrast between the painted elements and the "realism" of the photo, and the tension this creates in the picture space. This image is meant to suggest a breakdown between the interior and the exterior, the past and the present. I want to evoke buildings that keep traces of their inhabitants and vice versa, people who contain a memory of a dwelling within them.
