This is a mixed media piece, on wooden panel. I started it off as a collage, and then built it up. To begin with, I used a 1976 poster from Cuba, with a quote from Fidel Castro: "La aspiracion de las educacion universal solo es posible con la universalizacion del trabajo". There was imagery of soliers with sunglasses, in combat uniform. It struck me as severe and I wanted to show a human side to this militant imagery. Enter the street art supplies: lacquer-based paint sticks, inks, and other lacquer paints. I undid the poster's severity, covering up many of the soldier's faces with paint. The resulting artwork is one with contrasting rough and shiny textures. I've made art where there was military.
