ZIGGURAT is a site specific sculptural installation made entirely from wooden floor blocks within the abandoned Fisher Body Plant 21. Vacant for over 20 years, the elements have deteriorated Fisher Body, turning it into a cave-like atmosphere, with calcium deposit stalactites and stalagmites forming as water and snow make their way through the roof and windows. The factory has been stripped clean by scrappers, with the exception being millions of wooden blocks that have buckled in vein-like patterns over years of freezing and thawing. The project took place from late December, 2007 until I stopped building in August of 2008. By September, the Environmental Protection Agency had boarded and re-fenced Fisher Body, cleaning out any hazardous materials (including the millions of creosote preserved floor blocks). By January of 2009, the EPA was gone, and Fisher Body was once again abandoned and re-opened by scrappers. By winter of late 2009, it had periodically been re-boarded and used as a site for at least one film shooting. A secondary fence was added along the south side of the building, and at present the lot along Harper is guarded and used as a vehicle impound.
