The work is made from a Danish retro mirror whose surface is blackened with blackboard paint and scratched into with a series of repeated lines and crosses. With this body of work Melvin creates direct layers of history through deactivation and reactivation of the mirrors surface that render their function impotent to a certain extent where the viewer can see the drawings from a distance but not when their own reflection masks their view. With mirrors being incredibly loaded as objects that deal with perception, reflection, perspective, history and pure light, Melvin attempts to rediscover the object through drawing and effect its histories, function, and ultimately our usual interaction with the mirrored surface.
