Encircling Spaces was created specifically for the Rotunda Galleries at the Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, SC in 2005. It was a site-specific installation that responded to the airiness and sacred feeling of the Rotunda with its high ceiling, dome, large windows and arched doorways. Connections were made between the round architecture of man (dome) and the architecture of birds (nests). Through the incorporation of bird’s nests, pine straw, vines, seedpods, other natural materials and covering the floor with drop cloths there was the sense that nature had temporarily reclaimed the interior gallery space.
