About The Artwork

The original concept of "ritus" may be related to the Sanskrit ṛtá (visible order) in the Vedic religion "the lawful and regular order of the normal and, therefore, proper, natural and true structure of cosmic, mundane, human events and rituals". In a strict sense, the term “rite”, comes from the Latin ritus with which the Romans named their religious ceremonies, and refers to traditions that are rigidly reiterated in a symbolic or religious system. Émile Durkheim defined the rite as the “practice related to sacred things”, since they usually serve to strengthen certain taboos or certain ideas of the transcendent in society. A magical rite is a pragmatic act with supposedly useful purposes, which are carried out in the hope of satisfying a desire. It is these types of rites that we think of when we see witchcraft or divination ceremonies. For example, in many warrior tribes around the world there was a ritualistic practice of cutting off the heads of their enemies. But the indigenous Shuar tribe of South America in the Amazon basin of Ecuador and Peru are the only ones who also reduced the size of the heads of their enemies. A key concept to understanding the ritual motivation of the Shuar is to understand their beliefs regarding life after death, as they place great importance on the spiritual world and believed that by killing an enemy, their spirit lives on, within of the head and by cutting it off first and then reducing it, the victor took over the spirit of the defeated.
