I sketched townships, shacks, homesteads from in and around Cape Town. Without emotion or people, and thus removing myself from any statement or comment on an already loaded subject matter. My hope is to open people's eyes to see a way of living that perhaps they could never have begun to comprehend and maybe never will.
Cities of plastic, zinc, wood and cardboard evade or elude our everyday existence. I try to uncover the strongest love and the most enduring passion for extremes, total opposites, appropriately sketched in strong contrast, the black and white being symbolic of unequal but co-essential existences.
Perhaps trying to identify with them, intrigued by the exuberance of texture and colour of places like these, I felt compelled to spend time here to discover and feel more. Then, by removing myself emotionally from this, I entered into a line of thought and a way of sketching that entered this intimate and almost closed world around all of us. I was welcomed to document places like these with complete openness.
By this sketch I try to develop our understanding through a compelling treatment of remarkably insightful and emotive images, all working towards the idea of letting the viewer decide on so many heavy realities and everyday ignorance…
