The crisp sculptural forms, the carefully orchestrated figures posed in a baleful light make this painting by Jacques-Louis David a favourite.
Viewers familiar with this work may wonder about the absence of Brutus and the rest of the ensemble. The answer is simple; my computer hardware is inadequate for anything more complex. Admittedly, the trio of figures are the most interesting part of the painting, but more importantly, the invisibility of the source of the women's grief doesn't harm the poignancy of the moment.
