This is another of Pat Bullen-Whatling's series of 'Shadow' images in her Shadows and Reflections series. Here she shows us a simple image in a Welsh street in the ancient market town of Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, West Wales. The image shows us the shadow of a young boy carrying a wooden staff on a bright, sunny day She has removed the actual figures of the boy and, after enhancement, his shadow takes on a mass and 3D quality, almost as if it is oil on the road or another layer of tarmac. She suggests these shadows have become 'things' in themselves that can exist without the need of ever having a 'casting body' to create them in the first place.
This is one of Pat Bullen-Whatling's examinations of the permanence of the impermanent, of the overturning of perceived normality, suggested to her when she read of the permanent 'shadows' left after the Hisoshima and Nagasakai atomic bomb blasts at the end of World War II. Victims caught in the open by the heat blast momentarily cast a shadow onto any nearby wall or building so that, as the instantaneous blast of heat passed, the cooler part of the wall, protected by their body, maintains their images to this day.
