Gore Vidal is a American author, essayist, playwright, screenwriter and political activist. He was born into a prominent political family in 1925 and was raised in Washington, DC. His maternal grandfather was Thomas Gore, the Democratic senator from Oklahoma. A well respected man of letters he is often seen as a traitor to his class for his critiques of American foreign policy and culture. From his vantage point as a Washington insider he could criticize the American political system with a special knowledge of how that system really works. In spite of his reputation as a champion of liberal causes Gore Vidal considers himself to be a conservative with an almost proprietary attitude toward America.
