Born 1974, Jacksonville, FL; Derek Lerner is a New York City-based artist with a BFA degree from the Atlanta College of Art. His work explores systems: the creation, control, and use of them....
"Waste" is a series of drawings created with the idea in mind of artworks as virtual goods or variable media art objects. Each drawing can/will exist in multiple forms in terms of scale and medium.
These works are somewhat of a reaction to the idea of digital media as disposable or lacking in value when compared to physical "In Real Life" hand made art objects. My typical approach to creating works like this would have been to draw them by hand directly on paper, however with this concept in mind I chose to create them by hand on a computer using Adobe Photoshop and a Wacom Cintiq pen display.
As part of Telepresence (http://www.derek-lerner.com/Telepresence) these pieces exist as a series of drawings that are randomly presented each time a viewer resolves the piece's QR Codes or reloads the work from a saved bookmark. Conceived of to allow viewers to save/own the drawings obtained in the public space.
