Art Description

Different views of tundra in Alaska. Part of Ma series. Guiding principle of this work is Sesshū Tōyō's (a 15th-century Japanese Zen landscape painter) principle of ma. Ma—a spatial emptiness that provides an essential focal point between objects.
Based on a painting commissioned by the Alaska Psychiatric Institute. Many patients will never get out of there. Literally a captive audience. I wanted to make a painting about outdoors.
