This series focuses on the deprivation of freedom as it relates to different populations and sections of society around the world. Within it are a set of stop signs. They appear like standard road signs from different countries but the words are made up of a collage of photographs and articles about the most intolerable cases of oppression in those respective countries. This one is in English, the global language of our times, to capture the all-encompassing abuse of freedom around the world.
The “S” depicts the starting point of how intolerance infringes freedom (i.e. a homophobe denouncing gays under God, etc.). The sign ends with a “P” showcasing numerous cases of women’s freedom being violated (i.e. little girls being viscously circumcised in Asia and Africa, women beaten for thinking they deserve the right to exercise their freedom, etc.).
