Clare Freestone is Associate Curator of Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery in London. She was the curator of ‘Ida Kar: Bohemian Photographer’ (2011) and the author of the accompanying catalogue. She has curated and co-curated gallery displays ranging from early photographs in ‘Harley Granville-Barker and Lillah McCarthy’ (2006), ‘Goddesses and Others: Photographs by Madame Yevonde’ (2005) and ‘Walter Benington: Pictorial Portraits’ (2007), through to mid-twentieth century displays such as ‘Seizing an Instant: Photographs by Roger Mayne’ (2004), ‘Bill Brandt: Portraits’ (2004), ‘The Beatles on the Balcony’ (2006), ‘Private View: British Pop and the 60s Art Scene’ (2007) and ‘Jazz in London: Walter Hanlon’ (2008). Contemporary Gallery displays Freestone has worked on include ‘Photographs by Horace Ove’ (2004), ‘Fergus Greer: Photographer in Focus’ (2006), ‘Jillian Edelstein: In Focus’ (2009), ‘Eamonn McCabe: Artists and their Studios’ (2008), ‘Martin Amis and Friends: Photographs by Angela Gorgas’ (2009) and ‘An Englishman in New York: Photographs by Jason Bell’ (2010). She has assisted in the annual Photographic Portrait Prize, documenting the judging process. Freestone has assisted in the curation of exhibitions including ‘Cecil Beaton: Portraits’ (2004) and ‘Angus McBean: Portraits’ (2006).
