My artist heroes sought objects, which are seen and not looked at, thus allowing a set of familiar associations to answer the need for subject. I have based my flag art assemblage work in recognizable objects that collectively reinvent their symbolism. The assemblages challenge the examiner to look deeper and question the message upon closer inspection.
As an artist working strictly with state and national flags, my reinterpretation of banners allows the viewer to demystify their iconography and alter their individual symbolic perceptions. I juxtapose the integration of conventional objects into alternative conceptions capturing the vigorous collision of signs and symbols. The subversive flags reinvent the fabric of their intentions and focus on the realities they unfurl. The viewer’s relationship to work can provoke perceptions of substance abuse vs. healthy consumption, idol worship vs. celebrity, recycle vs. unsalvageable.
