David Campany is a writer, curator and Reader in Photography at the University of Westminster, London. In 2009 he curated a large show of Hannah Collins' work for Caixa Forum (Spain) and he co-curated ‘Anonymes: Unnamed America in Photography and Film’, which included work by Walker Evans, Lewis Baltz, Jeff Wall and Doug Rickard, among others, at Le Bal, Paris in 2010.
He has published essays on many artists and photographers including Rinko Kawauchi, Thomas Ruff, Victor Burgin, Chris Killip, Edgar Martins, John Stezaker, William Klein, Polly Braden, Mark Lewis, Eugene Atget, Man Ray, Seung Woo Back, and Karen Knorr. His books include Art and Photography (Phaidon, 2003), Photography and Cinema (Reaktion, 2008), and Jeff Wall: Picture for Women (Afterall Books, 2011). Campany is the co-founder of the magazine PA and has written for Aperture, Frieze, Tate, Source, and Photoworks.
His photographic work has been shown at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London and Photomonth Krakow. He has lectured at Tate Modern, London, The Photographers' Gallery, London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, The Art Institute of Chicago, Jeu de Paume and Le Centre Pompidou, Paris, and La Virreina, Barcelona. He is Reader in Photography at the University of Westminster, London, and his next book will be Walker Evans: The Magazine Work (Steidl, 2012). Campany won the 2012 Infinity Award for Writing on Photography.
