About

BRITISH, FINE-ART TRAINED OIL PAINTER, ART HISTORIAN & CURATOR.
ART CRITIC OF 'THE SPECTATOR' AND ELECTED MEMBER (UK) OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ART CRITICS (AICA).
Born in London, United Kingdom in 1973. Grew up in the wilds of North Yorkshire. Returned to London to study at the Courtauld Institute. Lives and works in London
STUDIO: 201, Unit 7F, Second Floor Studios & Arts, Mellish Industrial Estate, Warspite Road, London, SE185NR..
My art practice is informed by 19th and early 20th-century landscape symbolism painting from Northern Europe (Scandinavia and Germany), Britain, Russia, USA and Canada, and art theories and practices developed in these regions. My oil paintings are also a response to the history of colour and light theories. My paintings are unusual in having both a strong conceptual and aesthetic bases. I strongly believe that what is being neglected in contemporary art practice is an emotional content, at its deepest level, married to intellectual ideas and universal themes; for example, I am interested in how a contemporary artist can achieve, through colour and composition, the impact of an "icon" on the spectator. As primarily a painter in oils, who has an extensive knowledge of art history (this includes a PhD in Art History & Museum Studies) and how visual vocabulary was developed by artists, I see the continual research of theory, painting methods and materials as an essential part of my practice.
