About

The essential reason to be of my work is the comparative functional relationship between constrained physical elements.

It takes the form of wall mounted 3D light assemblages made of aluminium, acrylic and light emitting diodes (leds). Some recent work involved reflection, variable incident angle and colour light mixing. Currently I am interested in visual mass, light, colour and differential depth.

As a student I was interested in the optical kinetic artwork of the Zero group in Germany and artists such as Otto Piene and Heinze Mack and also Group Researche D’arte Visuel in Paris and artists such as Francois Morellet, Julio Le Parc and Jesus Raphael Soto.

My early work was kinetic and began with an interest in reflected colour and air movement. Later I incorporated attractive and repulsive magnetism and electric motors. Later I added small electric lights and then solid state electronics with programmable micro controllers. I integrated this rather dry technology with an enthusiasm for paint, light and colour.

The reason to be of each individual piece is usually a physical investigation of a relationship between a combination of the elements I use. This may be steered by a reference to something human. Mostly it is something intrinsic in the materials of the piece, for instance the necessity for some heat dissipating device or the integration of an insulated electrical circuit, or the optimality of balance and weight.

An innovation in my recent work is that parallel and convergent light beams are reflected off bare aluminium surfaces with compound curvatures. The resulting intensity of colour is very great. This intensity cannot be photographed as it burns out as white.

My most recent works use small leds and explore visual mass, depth differential and confusion. My current work is also kinetic and employs powerful electro magnets.

I work as an artist full time and my studio is in West London.
