About

Álvaro de Mendonça was born in Faro, Portugal, in 1959. He studied painting at Lisbon Fine Arts School, until 1986.

In 1982 he made his first individual exhibition - "Manifesto Exemplar". Also in 1982 he had his first contact with a painting from Francis Bacon - a cruxification - at an exhibition in Lisbon. Bacon became his most important conceptual reference in painting and human representation. From 1982 to 1993 he participated in several collective exhibitions and created the group "S/Título", together with other Portuguese painters, whose "purpose" was to act and sensitize to art and plastic expression. Since 1995 he worked on several scenographic projects, including large dimension scenarios and objects for dance choreographs and public performances. Also worked on many graphic design projects and digital image treatment.
In 2002 went back to Faro and made several painting exhibitions in the local museums and Art Galleries.
