Alvaro de Mendonca was born in Faro, south of Portugal, in 1959. Studied painting at Lisbon University Fine Arts School until 1985.
As many other artists started drawing and painting when was an young child and never stopped doing it until became a professional visual artist.
First individual exhibition was in 1982, when yet studding at Lisbon University. Since then participated on several collective art projects and made many individual exhibitions and public performances. Also in 1982 he had his first contact with a real painting from Francis Bacon - a crucifixion - at an exhibition in Lisbon. Bacon became his most important conceptual reference in painting and human representation.
In 1991 created the group 'S/Título' [No Title], together with other Portuguese painters, whose 'purpose' was to act and sensitize to art and plastic expression. Since 1995 until 2002 worked on scenographic projects, including large dimension scenarios and objects for dance choreographs, theater and public actions.
Also developed is knowledge on graphic design and photography and actually is an expert with a large portfolio working for Institutional and private companies.
