About

I was brought up in Cornwall and Devon. From an early age, the Cornish towns, forests and beaches caught my eye, one reason why I love St Ives and the kind of landscape and light that attracts many artists to this area and why I have always admired the work of Ben Nicholson. I enjoyed this atmosphere as a child and still have fond memories of the ocean, walking and exploring the towns, shorelines and coves.

As I grew up I was also exposed to a 'darker' more Baroque sense of identity and purpose in art. These two conflicts of light and dark, still affect my work today.

Much of my present work is inspired by my memory of early involvement with film making/makers and my introduction by friends to the Surrealist artists, Cocteau, Luis Buñuel, Tarkovskiy as well as Andre Breton. Their work captured a time and an atmosphere that I feel very comfortable with in terms of artistic expression and this offers me a great deal of inspiration but I am also interested in spirituality. Kandinsky's book, 'Concerning the spiritual in art', has always been a positive guide for me'. I find it helpful in terms of creating and thinking about my working progress.

I later moved to London then East Sussex. I travelled to the USA and lived in New Mexico where I became fascinated by Mexico’s artesanía tradition, a blend of indigenous and European techniques and designs. 'Artesanía can be defined as those items created by common people, using traditional methods which are well-founded in the past.' I often feel it is this playfulness and link to culture and tradition, similarly reflecting my family connection to Eastern Europe, that provide a link directly to the past and my present creative process, in terms of design, technique and shared cultural experiences and beliefs.

Arriving back in the UK I brought up my two daughters in Oxford and later Liverpool where I presently live.
