What I paint is often something that has caught me fleetingly, or out of the corner of my eye; the fall of light, shadows, shapes, contrasts, an atmosphere. I respond to places, scenes and things that have an air of earthy peace.
I am inspired by the everyday and commonplace, light and texture; an old bread crock on a stone hearth, a strand of ivy hanging over the edge of a weathered white-washed wall, a Bedouin knife propped on a shelf, a plate hanging on a heavy chimney breast. I also have an affinity for the countryside, coast and nature and the peace, stillness and solitude to be found there. In my paintings I respond not only to what I see but to the sounds, scents and feel of nature too - damp earth, wind in the trees, the rich scents of woodland, the ground underfoot.
