My ink and graphite drawings, balance a minimalist aesthetic with an expressive concept. I manipulate specific “found” images to create atmospheres that explore the relationship between light and line. I use this base to map out compositions that allude to natural forms, intricate webs, venation patterns and other botanical conglomerations; embracing ambiguity with attention to form, texture and shades of grey.
The subtle but distinctive variations in my drawings are created through mechanical changes in applied pressure and speed. Many of the drawings contain layered translucent cellular colonies inter-connected by delicate tendrils, inferring a strong insinuation of movement. In other works, my focus is on “surface”, where graphite is used in it’s rawest form; interrupted by texture, tone, and a sense of assembly.
This dense accumulation of rhythmic mark making that results from my systematic working process creates a composition of lines, subtle motion, and tension that toys with a balance between control and chance.
