About
My work is a distilled version of my wholesome American childhood. I take comfort in recalling the essential feelings my upbringing gives, rather than the detail of singular occurrences. Warm emotion is attached to treasures reminiscent of my nostalgic home. The process of archiving my life through carefully selected objects is a personal homage to beauty - an all-embracing solace I hope to share.
Seeking identifiable heirlooms is an enactment of care. Resplendent on its pedestal, my subconscious reacts to each individual in a disconcerting state of melancholia. My stylistic approach imbues my personal investment to my craft. As a painter I demand articulate splendor but as an observer I search for awe. The viewer may relish in a longing detachment since given an eye level perspective, a stance that is unbiased and in its most vulnerable state. Interaction of subject and shadow is a means to repeat the sentiment both physically and psychologically. This welcomes a seemingly endless visual journey that renews the utopic state of adolescence.
With the willful solitude of an only child, it was simple for me to relate to precious materials rather than beings. However, it is my intent to paint for people and not the object, trusting the relationship will strengthen. I search for a resolution from the collective past with a wish opposing upbringings will dissolve. These paintings nurture a meeting ground for memories to reconcile the past with the present and future.

Lex Hade, from a small town in northwest Ohio, has archived much of her life through collected objects. Her quintessential American upbringing derives her keen sense of reality, which determines her representational approach to painting. As an only child of blue-collar parents, Hade found herself with long periods of contemplative time. At an early age, she made an effort to have meaningful exchanges of ideas with others.
Hade’s most recent series comments wryly on these relationships, which are embodied in her paintings. The work takes shape as distilled images of her wholesome childhood, recalling a worn-in football helmet or a timeless milkshake blender. The paintings are her final artistic endeavor as she completes her B.F.A. in Painting from The Savannah College of Art and Design.
Hade is the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, such as the Nancy N. Lewis Endowed Scholarship and the Tiffani Taylor Painting for both her portfolio and academics. Last September, Hade was selected to speak at SCAD’s 2011 Annual Scholarship Luncheon, where she focused her comments on giving recognition to her mentors and influences. Also, her paper proposal, “Becoming Your Own Teacher” was selected for the 2011 Southeastern College Art Conference.
To date, the most memorable achievement of the painter’s career was being selected as the Spring 2011 resident for her university’s New York City Workspace Opportunity, a competitive academic residency located in Times Square. While in the city, Hade completed an internship at legendary Forum Gallery and held a studio exhibition of her new and recent work.
