About

Kathleen King is an artist living and working in Chicago. She has taught studio drawing and watercolor classes as a visiting adjunct professor at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea, July-Aug.2007-'08,'09,'10.

“Diva” is defined as a distinguished woman singer. Other definitions are Goddess, Deity and Prima Donna. Ms. King has come to see these abstracted figures in her latest work as “ Divas,”-- extremely temperamental and demanding attention! The ornate and iconic “Divas” depicted in this series originate from the humblest of botanical detritus, which gives these “Divas” in addition their fantastic and supercilious appearance, an ironic twist.

Source materials are derived from floral fragments and computer manipulation of these hand altered plant cast-offs. These materials, in turn, are referenced in the final mixed media paintings and drawings by recording the realistic botanical models and digital printouts with direct observational drawing/painting, intermixed with improvisational drawing/painting passages.

The balance between abstraction and realism allows Ms. King to infuse to her “scientific” recordings of the outer natural world with internalized musings about the totemic "Divas".
