Jander Fonseca de Lacerda

About

I was born in Brazil and live/work in San Francisco, CA. I make art works, I write randomness, I create.

Statement:

I'm interested in combining different materials and elements to create or change an image, to elevate it or diminish its glow and power--and from that my creative statement comes to life. In this work, I am exploring the myth of celebrity and beauty, of what is classic or sacred, while taking (for example) photographs by Annie Leibovitz, classic paintings by Da Vinci or Lautrec, cut out pages of W or Vanity Fair magazines, old record covers, or poetry books--among other things--as my essential elements of expression. I see quite passionately their beauty and power, and I have an innate need to add to them, to reinterpret, to enhance, or metamorphosize these already beautiful and powerful images passionately. This new body of work springs forth from this desire to communicate something extra. While I am not necessarily obsessed or fascinated by an specific artist or well known figure, all beings do indeed intrigue and fascinate me and the inspiration comes from this concoction of personal fragments, from music, and from the deluge of past and current events that I am or become aware of, whether conscious or subconsciously.

My hands are my soul, my feet, my eyes, my heart, are my soul; the earth upon which I walk is my soul as my art is my soul; all is my soul.

Education
Studied for a stint at the School of Visual Arts (NY), participated in drawing marathon at The New York Studio School; but I am mostly a passionate creator-auto-didactic.
