About

To date, the focus of my visual art practice has been in drawing.

Recently, this has changed somewhat and I find that my work has become increasingly more ideas led. Although my preference is still for pencil and drawing; photography, paint, mixed media and even sculpture are increasingly becoming part of my visual art vocabulary.

Nonetheless, each piece invariably begins with a series of observational drawings, driven by the technical challenge of working on the spot from life and the means this provides for engaging with the subject.

I grew up in London spending regular periods of time in the South West of Ireland since childhood. The close relationship I have with both places has shaped my art and approach to it.My urban upbringing has informed my aesthetic and my sense of humour. This influence is visible in my work through its graphic quality and occasional incorporation of street-art elements or urban imagery. Meanwhile, my roots are in the Old Head of Kinsale where the land and the character of its people are very much shaped by the Atlantic, once known as ‘The Sea of Doom’. The Ocean is a source of great inspiration and the awe I have for its power impacts hugely on my work. Whether exploring landscape, the figure, portraiture or architecture, the evocation of beauty in raw, physical power is always there.

Urban and natural are thus linked for me, hence my drawings and artworks examine dramatic natural landscapes, large architectural sprawls, martial artists and street acrobats, as for me these all share one thing in common and that is a dynamic, energetic power.
