Having known since the age of 5 that I wanted to be an artist, I have always pursued art part time, even during a professional career in Human Resources and Administration in New England. Now I am fulfilling a lifelong dream of pursuing art full time in the inspiring and intoxicating “big sky” environment of Southeastern Arizona.
My passion is to paint and do it in such a way that it touches, inspires, instructs, provokes, encourages and expresses the beauty and truth that exists in the natural and spiritual realms. Rich colors and textures are irresistible and I never tire of exploring them, often letting them guide the painting process. The vibrancy of my work is achieved through non-traditional use of color, space, light, perspective and materials - elements central to my artistic vision.
Working primarily in oils and mixed media, impasto and layering techniques give many works a bas relief quality, especially through use of palette knives. Often substrates are created of uneven surfaces and textures to add increased depth, dimensionality and interest. Painting is such an immediate and compelling joy that I often find myself using whatever tools my hand falls on first, including my hands/fingers themselves.
As a contemporary, impressionistic artist, experimentation with materials offers a liberating opportunity. Many of my works incorporate metallic elements and/or iridescent paints which enhance vibrancy and create whispers of light-reflecting sparkle. My newest body of work incorporates holographic film that is fascinatingly dynamic in its portrayal of light and color. It also creates almost two paintings within one piece because the holographic film interacts with whatever light it is placed under as well as the viewer’s angle. Daylight and artificial night light can create very different colors within the same piece and those colors change depending on the viewer’s angle.
Four themes are dominant: landscapes, abstracts, animals, prophetic work (spiritual/visionary); often these are interwoven. My inspiration comes from the environment and God; many paintings are inspired by Scripture or directly through visions and images.
Mywork is in private collections across the USA and has been in shows from coast to coast as well.
