Michael Behr completed a commercial education. However it could not fulfil his imagination and passion for personal expression. In Hamburg he studied Design in the Alsterdamm School of Art and changed to the Technical college of Design where he could study because of his art work with Prof.Max Mahlmann, the renowned representative of Minimal Art.
After successful years as a freelance Graphic Designer in layout, product and design management since the end of the 1990s Michael Behr has concentrated exclusively on free art. Michael Behr originated in the classical opposition of free art, the domain of advertising as an art that is controlled by the language of form and fixed laws of composition. Only because he had mastered the rules of the game, could he release himself from them.
Being liberated from any art dictated boundaries, Michael Behr has preserved his curiosity. The focal theme in his radiantly colourful, expressively figurative, almost photorealistic paintings and graphics is the interpersonal, emotional and erotic behaviour of both sexes. Therefore the artist is not only successful in visualising one valid subject but also questions existing clichs an conventions by means of humour and eroticism.
