Audrey Frank Anastasi

Audrey Frank Anastasi

About

Baltimore, Maryland, USA

Audrey Frank Anastasi has exhibited, and been collected extensively, both in the United States and abroad.

A working artist, curator, gallery director, educator and arts advocate, Ms. Anastasi been featured in Smart Money Magazine, New York & Company on NPR, AM NY newspaper, Pratt Folio, and the Brooklyn Arts 24/7 News Magazine.

Cindy Nemser wrote, "Anastasi's bold depiction of her mother as a looming and intimidating authority figure is daring. She is also courageous in using her skills as a gifted representational artist to tackle the ongoing thorny issue of women's conflicted attitudes toward their own sexuality."

Art historian Priscilla Bain-Smith says of Audrey's paintings, "They are very powerful, very contemporary, painterly, and captivating."

Anders Knuttson says, Audrey Anastasi is a master of figurative oil painting. Her surfaces are juicy, the brush strokes fast and confident she doesnt hesitate, she just paints.

Of her figure drawing, Buster Seccia, curator, says, "There is an immediacy and spontaneity in Audreys work that has always intrigued me. It is a very dark and sensual interpretation of the figure, classical, yet having a totally modern twist. Her works are cutting edge, almost punk rock, and never derivative."

Audrey and her husband Joseph Anastasi are currently co-directors of Tabla Rasa Art Gallery in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. They are both committed to the visual arts as an expression of the human spirit and a voice for social issues.

Audrey says, "I love all forms of paint and the magic of capturing and creating the image, especially the human face and form. I work in a fury, laying down whatever materials I can grab at a fast pace, indulging the intuitive. I employ techniques such as using big brushes and painting with my non-dominant, left hand, to facilitate a freer flow of images and ideas. I am motivated by the core belief that under the skin, and beyond cultural conditioning, there are shared universals of humanity."
