Sebastian Mügge (b. 1981 in Bonn, Germany) is an emerging German-Swedish interdisciplinary artist based in Umeå, Sweden. He received his MFA at Umeå Academy of Fine Arts in 2011.
In his practice he works in the borderland between painting, drawing, readymade, sculpture and installation. He often alternates these mediums as his intention is to find something which might connect these means of expression so they can become just one body of work- integration instead of segregation. These projects can result in research-oriented and expressive site-specific, often monumental and narrative sculptural pieces. In his experimental approach the sensual aspect is crucial as its function is to get the viewer emotionally involved in the artwork, and furthermore stimulate his intellectual curiosity.
His work includes recycling/sampling of alternative materials and carefully selected objects which are ready to be integrated in his art projects. In all mediums he hides a wide pool of symbols which he needs to investigate issues like identity, childhood, various conflicts impact on individuals’ daily life, irrational feeling of guilt, etc. Furthermore, he likes to play with historical and every day references, mixtures of cultural backgrounds and art historical quotations. Through his practice he is exploring the performative aspect of the studio production where a dialogue between the systematic and the open-ended is created. He is exploiting as well the potential and aesthetic value of found objects and analyzing their significance for the Western world. In general his work can be described as an exhalation of existentalist fear.
His work has been exhibited at numerous art institutions and galleries such as Künsterhaus Bethanien (Berlin, Germany), Kunsthistorisches Institut der Universität Bonn (Germany), Bildmuseet (Umeå, Sweden), WIP Konsthall (Stockholm, Sweden), Centre d’artistes Caravansérail (Rimouski, Canada) as well as Galleri Sandström/Andersson (Stockholm, Sweden) and Galerie Gerken (Berlin, Germany) which also represents him.
Upcoming projects in 2012/2013 include a residency at Höga Kusten/Kramfors (Sweden), a groupshow at Musée des beaux-arts de Mont-Saint-Hilaire (Québec, Canada) as well as solo shows at Galerie Tzara (Québec City, Canada) and Härnösands Konsthall (Sweden).…Read More
