This is the first of The Finding series, titled "Finding The Orangutan", which tell the story of endangered species, The Orangutan in Borneo, Indonesia. The Finding Series focus on Orangutan of Borneo, The Sumatran Tiger and Papua's Cendrawasih. The materials are carved out of Teak wood, assembled in layers that feature the species' characteristics. The green colors are acrylic paint to generate more greenery. The species are hidden to remind viewers that they are not easily seen due to their endangerment. I still utilize the Gestalt Theory of Visual Perception, mainly the principle of Closure to help with the abstraction. The abstraction helps the effect of visual accessibility that would be worth your time to try to locate the Orangutan. Clue: there are 2 Orangutans. Wood has a spiritual meaning in Indonesian culture and also sacred. It embodies life and messages from the Divine. With that belief, I assembled it with the Gestalt and the concept of spirituality and mystery complete each other. The original pieces are 200 cm x 400 cm and displayed at Plaza Office Tower, Plaza Indonesia. Originally a commissioned work, I've decided to make similar and smaller versions of the series. You can see the photos of the public art at my website. If you like what you see and find any interest, then feel free to drop me a message.
