Polymer coating, silk and oil on canvas. The canvas is stretched on a wooden frame and artwork is ready to hang. Framing is not required. This artwork was shown in Palazzo Bembo as a part of my installation in Venice Biennale 2022. WATER DANCE is a mantra to soaring beyond boundaries with grace and boundless power. It’s a metaphor for endless possibilities, an acknowledgement of time which haunts, holds, and cuts through each painting. A system in place which continuously tests his eventual acceptance and dialogue with the real world, in other words, an opening of windows to the world. Laying the canvas flat lets Whelan proceed with a surgeon’s precision whilst not compromising or assuming what may come. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, his canvases swirl like painterly voyages of the consciousness and draw attention to the beauty, fragility and vulnerability of our environment. “Water is flowing in the river, And river is within me.”

Fintan Whelan's method of painting is characterised by an immediacy of process and a urgency of vision, which he has been developing over several years. Despite the appearance of serendipity, Whelan's technique involves constant assessment, measurement and exploration of pigments and their configurations, combined with varnishes, oils and a variety of materials. The challenge that Whelan's art presents constitutes his motivation - that is to create resonances between or among the senses by exploiting the ever-changing detail of light and texture. His abstracts are worlds eliciting a multitude of emotional and intellectual responses that we, as viewers, must resolve. Fintan Whelan was born in Dublin and has spent his adult life in Ireland, Spain and Germany (his current home). His work has been exhibited and acquired by numerous collectors across North America, Europe and Australia, and featured in prominent residential projects in UK and USA. Artist in residence at Chelsea Harbour Design Centre (London) and member of BBK (Federal Association of German Fine Artists).
