From Chicago to London to Amsterdam the development of drillrap, an agressive transcript of rap music, is very disturbing. Where in the old days young boys hang out together in the street, playing cowboy or knight, chasing eachother with plastic bow and arrow, nowadays they challenge eachother with 14 inch sharp knifes. Kids, starting at the age of 10, 11, sometimes even younger, influenced by the way their older brothers act. First with words in lines in songs. But things easily escalate into real fights, often with serious injuries and sometimes even death. In music you can express your anger, fear, sorrow with words. This has always been a poetic form. But it turned into a grim and harsh message, no metaphor or wordplay, just plain lines trying to challenge the opps (opponents).

Katelijn Bergman, Zeist 1964 France 1985 - 1986 Amsterdam since 1986 Always fascinated by people. Young, old, male, female, children... Their untransparent thoughts and habits, character and emotions. These I find in all layering of life, in present and past. In addition, I want to depict the essence and also allow a sensation of aesthetics. But within those undefinable laws of beauty, I search for an element that lifts the subject into a larger context. Furthermore I try to find a balance between reason and emotion, between what you see and what you feel, between expression and content. I have a perception of things on multiple levels of reality. A process of acquiring, recording, interpreting, selecting and organizing sensory information on a worldly- and personal level. While painting I search for a tension between the objective and the subjective. Between 2016 and 2018 I painted a series called ‘à la recherche du temps perdu’, in search of lost times. Originally it is the title of a novel by Marcel Proust, he wrote in 7 parts, early last century. These paintings have been exposed on several occassions. At the moment I am working on a new series, Shadows & Light.
