Chilled on Sunday is a figurative painting based on Samuel’s friend Owen. Owen is a talented photographer and the pair spent the day modelling for each other for various creative projects. This pose of Owen inspired Samuel to paint, in particular the light and shadow cast across his body and the shaker doors behind him. An orchid pokes into the scene from a window sill on the right, adding another element and extra shapes into the artwork. The 90cm x 90cm canvas is covered in Samuel signature textured surface, cracking medium, gel and pumice paste. The scene is painted over the surface in acrylic paints in different blue tones. Samuel is not a figurative painter, but wanted to see how he could translate a body onto this texture, he thinks it was a successful experiment and has created a beautiful painting. He chose to create this artwork in monochrome, exaggerating the areas of light and shadow in one colour. Samuel has left areas of texture on show with layers of blue poking through the solid shapes across the body. These imperfections are a conscious choice by Samuel, exaggerating the surface of the canvas. Samuel has signed the back of the painting.
