For the original, the canvas was laminated with Acrylic matte medium with a page from a 1965 Wall St. Journal financial page. The image was painted on that in oil. The artist wanted to capture the sharp, late afternoon light at the Jumping competition, and used just a vignette of the actual image to focus on the chiaroscuro. Using the financial page was inspired by the fact that vast amounts of money are required to support involvement in the Equestrian world. The piece offered here is an inkjet print on canvas, mounted on custom made thick stretchers. Carefully hand enhanced by the artist, ed.20, signed and numbered by the artist.

ARTIST LYNN MATSUOKA DOCUMENTS CULTURE CNN reported: “Few artists so completely dominate their field that their name becomes synonymous with the subject matter, but Lynn Matsuoka has succeeded in capturing the essence of Sumo and has won a loyal following along the way.“Like Degas with his dancers, Lynn Matsuoka set out to depict the particular beauty of performers who devote their lives to an all-encompassing craft, capturing the nuances of the world they create in the process. Her own devotion was noted, and doors opened that had never been opened before, to anyone”. The Artist gained fame working with Sumo, Kabuki Theater, Bunraku, Geisha & Maiko (young Geisha) in Japan for more than 4 decades. A color commentator on the NHK TV worldwide Sumo broadcast for 15 years, she has acted as liaison/translator for NBC sports, Asia Society, President Carter & National Geographic Society, among others. This award winning artist has documented in drawings & paintings; Native Americans, Ballet, Equestrian Events, Hula, Major League Baseball, the NFL, and Broadway Theater. Matsuoka documented Watergate hearings for ABC & CBS before moving to Japan, the Naval Court of Enquiry into the Ehime Maru/Greenville disaster at Pearl Harbor in 2001 for all the networks in USA & Japan, and President Clinton & Bon Jovi for 911 Fundraisers. The Legendary Milton Glaser described Lynn Matsuoka as “probably the greatest living reportage artist”. Matsuoka’s first book “The Scent of Binsuke” was published in 1981. Matsuoka is the author of SAVING OUR SEABIRDS, an adult coloring book, http://bit.ly/SOSbirds and her upcoming Memoir, The Secret Worlds of Lynn Matsuoka The Artist Behind the Curtain.
