About The Artwork

This artwork, part of my Exchange Currencies series, showcases a profile portrait of a woman on a circular wooden surface resembling a coin. The Maori phrase "kaore au e marama aroha mai" adorns the coin, translating to "I don't understand, sorry" in English. Painted in acrylic with warm ochre and yellow tones, it incorporates a small metal stud as a piercing and small marker pen marks resembling street art or tattoos. Conceptually, this piece is part of a project where I, drawing from my own experiences, explore the theme of foreignness and the feeling of 'not being from here.' It also resonates with the experiences of others who have faced the challenges of migration. These artworks are designed to function both individually and in various compositions, allowing for tailored installations with as many pieces as desired. This series revolves around the concepts of value and price. I present to the public the acquisition of a currency as a transferable value solely valid for future works authored by me. This dynamic value, unrelated to determining the worth of the artwork itself, is inherently arbitrary, with valuation based on reasoned considerations between different currencies. These currencies facilitate the enhanced value transfer of the artistic object for future works, intentionally disregarding any symbolic overvaluation associated with the creative process. Nevertheless, each piece stands as a unique creation, deliberately crafted with technical flaws, signed, and serving as a certification of originality. While conventional currencies often depict figures like kings or presidents representing national identity, my currencies feature a collection of anonymous profiles accompanied by disconcerting phrases, alluding to a vast community living in a state of 'not belonging'—a depiction of the depreciation frequently defining origins, laws, and inequalities.

Chisinau, 1982. Moldovan artist based in Spain. My approach is figurative and revolves around mainly human themes: metanarratives, death, value, subjectivity, family, among others. I like to approach them from a playful plastic game of repetitions, juxtapositions of colors, deformations in favor of psychological realism, and arbitrary use of elements and resources that I have in my studio. One of the constants in my work is the creation of panels, which, through the repetitive use of representations make a narrative. The visual element of repetition, particularly in the form of portraits, is a graphic obsession for me that captures a world where seriality is a defining feature. These pieces address themes such as death, tempus fugit, obsolescence, using a vibrant color palette inspired by folk art, advertising and Kitsch. The final image is a colorful and humorous antithesis.
