A beautiful hand built vase made by joining four lengths of extruded hollow squares together. This vase is most suited to being for ornamental purposes because of its size and shape. There are flashes of colour you expect from raku and various effects arising from the position of the vase when the oxygen was reduced. The bold blue and the gold colours are particularly stunning. There is some texture to the surface. maximum height of the vase is ca 244mm/9.5". It is essentially a square with each side ca 77mm/3". After the first (bisque) firing ordinary earthenware glazes were applied with some additional oxides. The vase was rapidly heated up to 960°C, then placed in a barrel filled with combustible material, covered with wood shavings, and allowed to smoke. The amount of oxygen that is allowed during the firing and cooling process affects the resulting color of the glaze and the amount of crackle. Generally my practice is to starve oxygen by placing a lid on the barrel after 1-3 minutes. The process is highly unpredictable but often causes metallic colours to be revealed as well as dark colours, often bearing no resemblance to any glaze used (as in this instance). What is Raku? Raku firing is a traditional Japanese pottery technique known for its unpredictability and unique results. It is often characterized by its crackled glaze and vibrant colors, making it a sought-after art form for many collectors and enthusiasts. From start to finish a pieces such as this will take 14+ hours to complete with the designing, extruding, joining, shaping, bisque firing, glazing and then the raku process. In addition to the costs of time and materials there are other overheads such as the power for the kiln.

I have been a ceramicist for more than 30 years. 99% of my work is made using coils, slabs and pinch pots with the occasional use of extruded forms and aslip casting. The emphasis of my work is scupltural and ornamental rather than utlitarian. I have a particular interest in the fusing and melding of glass to ceramics and this body of work is collected from as far afield as the Middle East and USA.
