About The Artwork

"Mycelium - World Wide Web" is a one-of-a-kind statement artwork. Handmade with pure Portuguese wool yarn with anti-moth treatment, with portuguese black cork mirror frame and a textile sculpture element. Using tufting and carving techniques, the bass-relief is carved with scissors, creating different heights and a textured based landscape. Mycelium is a fascinating biological structure that plays an essential role in ecosystems and in biology and ecology research. This network of microscopic filaments (represented with textile sculpture), associated with fungi, is a vital part of the natural processes that sustain life on Earth. Hidden among the world of plants and animals, it plays a critical role in the decomposition of organic matter, the recycling of nutrients and the formation of symbiotic relationships, thus being fundamental in the cycle of nature from birth, to death and rebirth. Mycelium is a kind of natural internet, which connects all of nature. “Mycelium World Wide Web” is a piece that invites us to reflect on human beings role on the planet. Using different materials, shapes and textures, we seek to create a parallel between the technological world and the natural world and raise interest in this subject, whose research is still in its beggining and much has yet to be uncovered. It is now known that fungal composites are the recently implemented technology that fulfills the concept of the circular economy, being used in different applications, such as medicine, food, packaging, architectural projects, insulation and textiles. These incredible life forms could be the key to solving some of humanity's most pressing problems. By focusing on a virtual network, aren't we distancing ourselves from the crucial network that surrounds us? Are we really (dis)connected?

Estudio OHXOJA is a textile art studio that seeks to have an original approach inspired by the sea and nature. Catarina Cruz and Tiago Amaral, self-taught textile artists, are the portuguese couple behind the studio. They come from different backgrounds, Catarina was window dresser and area team manager at the biggest spanish fashion retailer for more than 20 years and Tiago was freelance architect with strong artistic heritage, growing up and living surrounded by his grandfathers awarded artworks, among ceramics, tiles and paintings. In 2020, during pandemic, they discover in textile art a new form of expression and start autonomously exploring traditional techniques of tapestry. Estudio OHXOJA was the result project that was born from the need of slowing down against society’s rush, mass consumption and mass production, and in this new adventure they were able to collide creativity and artistic perspectives, enjoying every step of the way. The studio is based in Costa da Caparica, a beach paradise near Lisbon and the proximity of the sea and natural landscapes inspire them in creative process. The couple produce handmade contemporary tapestries with 100% portuguese wool, for the wall or the floor using various techniques, from punch needle, tuftinggun or textile sculpture. The bas-relief is carved with scissors, accentuating shapes, light and shades. Each piece is unique and unrepeatable, reflecting emotions or memories and providing both visual and tactile experiences for those who purchase it. Raising awareness of how human behavior impacts the environment is one of the concerns in their creations.
