The series GRID is an experimental abstract woodcut, based on 3 single, completely independent carved plates which finally are printed in different colors, overlapping each other. The result is a vibrating Image of interacting openings and cuts, overlapping forms and colors. Each single print is a unique work, printed in very different color sequences. GRID is a work, which includes indeterminacy and the most variety of possibilities and allows a multitude of interpretations, but at the same time focuses on the theories of geometry, mathematical systems and methods that are already known from mapping. „Maps are statements about the physical nature of the world, its shape and its limits. They display beliefs or concepts about the nature of the world and how it can be depicted.“ (Christian Jacob: Towards a Cultural History of Cartography, 1996) Based on the so called „Amsler grid“, a tool that eye doctors use to detect vision problems resulting from damage to the macula, the most sensitive part of the central retina, responsible for visual acuity and color vision, Osnowski’s work tries to investigate geometric shapes and how to use them to question the influence of colors and color perception on them. The artist reproduces seemingly overlapping and cutting forms in powerful color nuances that convey a three-dimensional feeling of movement. This work is also influenced by the color theories of the German painter, teacher and art theorist Josef Albers, who dealt with color and form and their interpenetration in his own works. This particular work of the series, number 3/8 is printed in the sequence yellow / orange / red / warm violet, with high pigmented oil-based inks on 240g/m2 german Hahnemühle paper.

„For many years now, Stefan Osnowski has been concerned with a new approach to wood engravings and has been developing the opportunities inherent to the technique. When preparing the engravings enlarged to the size of an easel painting, he creates a range of tonal values purely through the variation of the width and depth of the carved lines, horizontal and vertical or diagonal, as well as through the alteration of the density of the grid whilst retaining a purely monochrome imagery. His printing technique also deviates from the norm, due to the use of a palm- size glass lens to manually rub the ink onto the paper rather than a printing press, thus preserving the apparent uniqueness of each individual item in a series. Physical contact and hand-crafting is just as much a part of the concept as gathering a theme or selecting a medium.”
