Boldt Castle on Hart Island near Alexandria Bay NY Acrylic on Belgian Linen stretched over Board. In my memories Boldt Castle on Hart Island was always a place of beauty and mystery. The morning light breaking through the mist over the river always had an ethereal feel to me, but that morning the emotion was especially intense and captivating. The diffractive light through the mist sent bands of colors reflecting off the water and were amplified by the whiteness of the new snow causing sparkles of light to shift and move rapidly in your vision. On a normal day this effect usually causes snow blindness and leaves faint after images in your eyes but that morning the light was muted just enough to see clearly the soft shifting pastel colors of the rainbow illuminate the island and river before me. The view that morning left a great impact on me so much so that I can still see it clearly in my mind's eye today. I hope this painting conveys some of the beauty I felt and saw that day to you.....thank you for looking.

Matthew McDermott, b. 1981 NY, is an artist living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mat struggles with mental illness and epilepsy on a day to day basis but has found his purpose in the creative arts in the form of painting, stained glass and custom woodworking. Prior to 2018 his work was available only through a commission basis and resides in private collections throughout the United States. In 2015 he was fortunate enough to gain a patron that funded the body of his work now available in his portfolio. "My artwork has become my only way to find myself again. Life is good when I'm painting and creating and I'm happy because I'm doing what I love. When things are bad I focus on the fact that my art is there waiting for me to get better and that it is something to hang on to when everything seems so horrible and normal life feels like a dream or a story that can't possibly be real."
